ESPAD 2024

Research project of the Department of Sociology and Addiction Research, IPiN

Study name: ESPAD  2024

Completion date: March 1, 2024 – December 31, 2024

Goal of the project: is to carry out nationwide school research as part of the European Program called: European School Survey Project on Alcohol and Drugs - ESPAD. Poland has been participating in this research program since its beginning, i.e. since 1995 - the 2024 study will be the eighth.

The analysis of Polish results against the background of results from 35 European countries participating in the program should provide the basis for formulating conclusions and recommendations for addiction policy and preventive actions in this area.

Following the example of previous editions of ESPAD, the research issues will focus on the following areas:

  • Drinking alcohol and using other psychoactive substances is widespread
  • Drinking patterns
  • Assessing the availability of drugs and alcoholic beverages
  • Attitudes towards drugs and alcohol
  • Prevalence of alcohol-related problems
  • Preventive functions of the family
  • Prevalence of the use of legal highs and assessment of their availability
  • The prevalence of risky behaviors from the perspective of "behavioral addictions" (excessive use of the Internet, computer games and gambling)

The study is to cover school youth born in 2008 and 2006. Therefore, the study will cover youth aged 15-16 and 17-18. The study will be carried out on a representative random sample of these youth.

The sample will be of a cluster and stratified nature. The drawing unit will be the school class. 96 school classes will be selected from each education level (192 classes in total). As a result, the size of both samples together should amount to approximately 4,800 students.

The research will be carried out using the audience survey method by a team of interviewers recruited from outside the education system.

In the instructions, students will be assured of the full anonymity of the research, both at the level of individual students and the entire school. This means that school-level results are also confidential.

After registration, the surveys will be subject to a verification procedure. Then, a data set will be created and verified, and calculations and statistical analyzes of the study results will be performed. The results of the study will be presented in a nationwide report against the background of the results from previous editions of ESPAD. In addition, a data set and a methodological report will be prepared to be submitted to the European Coordinator.

The resources of the Institute of Psychiatry and Neurology include a huge, unique collection of brains from the Department of Neuropathology, including material collected from 1952 to the present by successive generations of neuropathologists. The archiving of brain fragments was initiated by an outstanding Polish neuropathologist, prof. Ewa Osetowska.
The collection includes a collection of brain fragments preserved in a buffered formalin solution, paraffin blocks, histological and immunohistochemical preparations, and medical documentation.
